Senior Socializing: How to Make New Friends

Making friends can sometimes feel challenging. Especially in the era of social distancing, meeting others and building relationships is not as easy as it once was. However, there are a variety of creative ways to get out there.

Here are a few steps you can take from the comfort of our 55+ active community.

Volunteer

Once out of retirement, we often look for ways to keep ourselves busy. Think about something you are passionate about, whether it's helping children, animals, or cleaning up litter in your local community. There are also virtual opportunities as well. Consider a pen pal program through a local nonprofit, and match with someone who has been social distancing and in need of human connection.

Enroll in Classes

It's never too late to learn something new or pick up a hobby you've always wanted to try. Enroll in continuing education courses through your local community college or community center. Many have online options (to meet new people, we suggest something that is more collaborative). There are also an abundance of outdoor workout programs catered to different ages. Look into your local gyms that provide socially distanced workout classes.

Join a Book Club

There are so many opportunities to join book clubs these days. Many local bookstores offer virtual and in-person book clubs, where you can share your love for stories with other members of the community. Reading is a wonderful way to connect with your peers and explore your imagination.

Maintaining and making new friendships is crucial for anyone's overall well-being. You deserve to do things that bring you joy, so don't let anything stop you from learning a new instrument or taking a dance class. Chances are, there are others out there who could use a new friend, too. Augusta Woods loves bringing our community together, contact us today for more information.
